Junior Secondary School Integrated Science Lecture Note.
TOPIC: LIVING AND NON LIVING THINGS
Living Things are the things that has Life.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS.
1.Growth:
They increase in size
2.Feeding:
They have the ability to digest energy
3.Respiration:
They breath in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide(CO2)
4.Respond to stimuli:
They respond to change in their environment.
5.Movement:
They have the ability to shift from one place to another.
6.Reproduction:
They have the ability to create new ones or rather young ones.
7.Death:
They will later die and decay and become non existent.
Finally, any thing on earth that does not have the ability to do all the above mentioned characteristics is called a Non Living thing.
HUMAN BEINGS AS INTELLIGENT ANIMALS.
Primates are animals with the following Characteristics:
1. They have hairs or furs on at least parts of their body.
2. They do not lay eggs, they give birth to their young ones alive.
3. The mother feeds it's young ones with milk from mammary glands.
Humans belong to a group of animals called mammals and a sub group of mammals called Primates.
Humans(Man & Woman) differ from other primates by the following reasons:
1. They can stand and walk in an upright position.
2. Their brains are developed with the ability to use third party tools to solve Problems.

Well, Emeka,
Life is the ability to possess or have the 7 characteristics of living things, which I have mentioned and explained in this Lecture class.
I believe everybody here knows and understands the characteristics of living things. |

CLASS STUDENTS
Good day Sir, My name is Emeka...
Sir, I would like to know the meaning of Life when you said that living things are the things that have life ?.You can tap above to rephrase the question... |

CLASS STUDENTS
Good day Sir, My name is Uche,
Sir, please I would like to confirm if life means Living and If living means the following Characteristics:
1. Ability of Growth; 2.Ability of Respiration; 3.Ability of Movement; 4. Ability of Feeding; 5. Ability to Respond to stimuli; 6.Ability to digest energy; 7.Ability to Die and become non existent? You can tap above to rephrase the question. |

|
Uche,
Yes, you are very correct in your thinking, thank God somebody here is getting the necessary understanding...
Quite correct... And please class at this moment l would like you to remember that things like stones, sands, water and gases are non living things because they do not possess the 7 characteristics of living things mentioned by Uche.
Any more questions please...

Good Day Sir, My name is Adaobi,
Sir, please I did not understand the explanation you gave about the Respond to Stimuli as one of the Characteristics of Living things? You can tap above to rephrase the question. |
---|
|
well Adaobi,
A respond to stimuli means the ability to respond to environmental issues as you live your life. Environmental issues includes the ability to feel or sense(reason out) comfortable and dangerous environmental factors that affects our life, and respond to them by adaptation or withrawal from such Stimuli. Some environmental stimulus includes to feel the heat of the sun, the air of the wind, sharp object, rain, and our ability to move away or adapt to them is our respond to stimuli, non Living things do not feel nor respond to stimuli...

Good day Sir, My name is Obiora,
what do you mean when you said that Primates feed their young ones with milk from mammary glands?... I do not know what mammary glands means.?You can tap above to rephrase the question. |
---|
|
Well Obiora,
If you have ever seen a woman that gives a child breast milk, then I would like you to know that the milk the child sucks is produced or synthesized from the mothers glands inside her body called mammary glands. |

CLASS STUDENTS
Good Day Sir, My name is Nkem,
please Sir, what are other types of Primates not mentioned in your Lecture notes?...You can tap above to rephrase the question. |
---|
|
Well Nkem,
Primates include monkeys, apes and humans. These mammals are characterized by detailed development of the hands and feet, and a large brain. |

|
CLASS STUDENTS
Sir,
When you said that Humans differ from other Primates because they can stand and walk upright, I can understand and see that but when you say that their brains are developed more than other Primates because they can reason and use third party tools, I am confused because other Primates reasons also in their own perimeter...? You can tap above to rephrase the question. |

|
Nkem!, Nkem!!
You have been quiet seen this class resumed, now you are asking the most intelligent questions ever in the history of my teaching profession for a JSS 1 student who is 13 years of age.
Well, no other Primates can use third party tools to produce better artificial tools which are preferably better than naturally occurring tools or products except humans.e.g a monkey can use stones as third party weapon tools but they can not produce better weapon like hammer or guns to solve the same problems better. scroll up to continue reading... |
